POLYURETHANE IMPLANT: THE BREAST SURGEON'S BEST FRIEND

The use of implants with a polyurethane surface during immediate breast reconstruction allows women with breast cancer to have surgery with a low rate of complications and implant loss. However, the main advantage of this surface for breast surgeons is that it allows second chances for reconstruction in women who experience a postoperative complication. The foam's early integration and high resistance to infection facilitate skin coverage techniques for the treatment of partial necrosis or the placement of prepectoral expanders when contamination is suspected. Our prospective PreQ-20 study has demonstrated this low complication rate in oncologic surgery (Cancers) as well as the possibility of preserving the reconstruction in cases with skin necrosis through the use of local flaps (Plastic & Recons Surg).
In this video, we present 11 clinical cases of postoperative complications after prepectoral reconstruction with polyurethane implants and outline different technical options for their resolution.
